Our camera builder, George Mann,

Hollywood & Broadway actor in

"Hell's a Poppin," answered our newspaper

ad with this question: "Where do I sit?"

Lab man, Dale Laster, 41 years in

Air Force Reserve. He also worked as our photography assistant.

Jim Ashley, another of our assistants, never complained. His good manners earned him a kiss from one of our models.

The above three assistants were kind enough to pose for "How not to shoot a portrait".

I carry 3 lenses with my Pentax: 20mm wide, 50mm normal, 85mm long. I also have 200mm, 400mm, 80mm to 200mm zoom, for wild animals, surfing, etc.

My favorite for portraits is 85mm because I don't shoot closer than 5 feet, to avoid distortion. George & Dale were shot with my 20mm, worst possible lens at a distance of one foot!.....( Forgive me, George & Dale and Jim.)

Arnie Johnson gets a makeover
A make-up artist covered the freckles, shadowed the eyelids and applied lipstick. Her hair was re-wet and brushed as it blow-dried to give smoother more sophisticated styling. The nose was slimmed down by moving the key light to camera left. The teen-ager is now a sultry woman!

LadyRc1 refined
A top-notch plastic surgeon reshaped

the nose. Her hair was bleached and styled.

The act of smiling made her eyes appear smaller

and more expressive and made her mouth

appear fuller, showing off her beautiful teeth.

ManWc1 smoke cigarette
Actor Allan Bruce did not shave for two days,

washed his hair to make it more unruly. Peter

directed one back-light to each side of his hair

and one key light front. Allan leaned forward with

eyes half mast. A cigarette dangled from his lips

to compliment his dopey expression.

Also taken in my living-room-studio,

66 years ago, was a "funny-friend"

Stan Dunn. who had that "natural-look"

with casual clothing, Same key light to the

side, background light, but this time a

hair-light, to give Stan a little "glamour."

Joe Bardo always had pretty women around him.  His handsome

face and physique appeared with Mae West in her Las Vegas Act. Always a soft-spoken charmer, Joe worked his way from cameraman

to successful producer. He also married happily.  His wife and children carry on his work. Peter worked with Joe often. He was a good friend.

Actor John Dierkes was a regular at the

beach, but I liked the drama of this portrait,

made in my studio.  1905-75   55 films.

Research this actor at IMDB.com.
